Christmas Opening Hours

The office will be closed on Saturday, Dec 24th and will re-open on Saturday, Dec 31st. The office will be closed on Jan 2nd and will resume normal opening hours on Tuesday Jan 3rd.

Parish Draw

The Parish Draw will be held on Tuesday evening, December 20th in the Parsih Centre. Draw Cards have been delivered to each house in the area. A line on the card is 2 euro and this gives you the opportunity to win one of numerous valuable prizes. Any monies raised will be used for essential works on the Churches and Parochial Houses in the Parish.

Community Games

The Community Games in Castlepollard have been reactivated and a new committee has been set up to organise the different games which the children will take part in. For further details, contact Helen Mulvey, Jeroen Holtkamp, Una Egan, Doreen Farrelly or any committee member.

Poker Classic

A poker classic in aid of the jack and jill Foundation will be held in the Seven Wonders Bar, Fore on Saturday night next at 8.30pm. The entry fee is 25 euro. Please support.


Castlepollard hurling Club are holding their AGM next Saturday evening at 7.45pm in the Parish Centre. All members should attend.

New Years Eve Dance

Ringtown are holding a 'fancy dress' dance in the Club Complex on New Years Eve night. This is purely a social occassion and admission is free.

Fitness Centre

The new Health and Fitness Centre in Castlepollard is open for business and will shorlty be holding classes in various disciplines. For info, phone 083-4348888.

A walk to support Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland will take place in Mullaghmeen Forest at 10am on St. Stephen's Day. Please support.

Folk Choir

Young people of all ages are invited to join the Folk Choir which sings at Saturday evening Mass in Castlepollard. Practice takes place in the Church on Tuesday evenings at 7pm.

Christmas Lights

On Sunday, December 4th, in the presence of a large crowd, Fr. Moore and Rev O'Cathain switched on the lights which adorn the trees around the Square. Santa made a welcome visit to the delight of the children present. Great credit is due to the lighting Committee for their ongoing progress to light up all the trees around the Square. Next year, with continuing support from the people of the area, this should be achieved.

Tullynally Castle Tearoom is holding it's first Christmas Craft Fair this weekend, Saturday and Sunday 3rd & 4th December from 12.30 - 6pm. There will be a Charity raffle in aid of Crumlin Children's Hospital. There will be no entrance fee to the Fair.

The Fair is showcasing local artisans and craft makers and stalls will include wooden crafts, vintage jewelry, pottery, vintage clothes, paintings, homemade cosmetics, indian head massage, textiles and much much more. The Tearoom in Tullynally is open every weekend from 1 - 6pm  for home baked cakes, soups, panini, and lunches.  Tullynally Castle is situated 1 mile outside Castlepollard - for map go to" Treat your friends and family to unique handmade gifts while supporting local craftspeople...there's something for every body at the Tullynally Christmas Craft Fair.

Castlepollard Gardening Club

 The October meeting of Castlepollard Gardening club was held on Thursday 27th October in the Parish Centre, Castlepollard.

 Ms. Ruth Illingworth from Mullingar gave a very interesting talk on ‘The history of gardening in Ireland’. She informed us the earliest gardening was done by the monks in monasteries in the 6th and 7th centuries and developed from that down through the years. This was a very informative and interesting talk and we thank her for the hard work she put into preparing this presentation.

At this stage we are looking forward to our Christmas festive flower arranging night that will take place on Thursday 8th December at 8pm in the Parish Centre. Well known florist Theresa Nixon is doing the honours this year and a good evening’s entertainment is guaranteed. All flower arrangements will be raffled afterwards. The supper will consist of Christmas fare and there will be a small admission fee. All are welcome

A table quiz in aid of Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland will take place in McCormack’s Pub, The Square, Castlepollard, on Friday night next, November 25th, starting at 9.30pm.

Come along for a great night’s quizzing and craic in aid of a very worthwhile cause.

On Sunday, October 30th, there will be a fundraising walk in Fore. The walk will commence at 2pm and all proceeds will go to Breastcheck Ireland.

Community Alert News

The local Community Alert are launching a new initiative to help keep local people up to date with any suspicious activity in the area. People who subscribe 5 euro will receive alert texts to their mobile phones. Similiarly, people will be able to text the central unit with info on any suspicious activity they see and this will be forwarded on to other subscribers. The community alert group are also looking at installing CCTV cameras in the area and there will be further details on this later.


Congratulations to Lough Lene Gaels Camogie Club on winning the senior county championship on Saturday last, October 15th, when they defeated Raharney by 2 points. This is their first Championship win in ten years and they will now represent Westmeath in the Leinster club championship.

Eucharist Congress Bell

On Wednesday, October 12th, the Eucharist Congress Bell was brought to Castlepollard where ceremonies took place at a number of locations. The Bell will be brought to every parish in the country in the lead up to the Eucahristic Congress which will be held in Dublin in 2012. It was last held in Ireland in 1932.

Castlepollard Gardening Club 

The autumn programme of Castlepollard Gardening Club commenced on Thursday September 29 in the Parish Centre, Castlepollard. Ms. Cathy Doyle from the Royal Horticulture Society of Ireland gave a very interesting talk entitled ‘Going Dutch. The history of bulbs.’ Cathy is a beautiful speaker and all present enjoyed her talk. Tulips are her favourites and she spoke about all the various kinds of tulips. Many thanks to Cathy for coming down from Dalkey to speak to us and to our secretary Shirley who organised the evening.

 The meeting for October will take place onThursday 27 October at 8pm in the Parish Centre. The speaker for the evening will be well known local historian from Mullingar Ms. Ruth Illingworth who will speak on the subject ‘The History of Gardening’.The competition on the night will be for the best pot plant flowering and non flowering. All are welcome.


New Gym

All-fiT Gym now opening in November 2011, situated on the Old Castle Road, beside Tesco Express. A fully equipped gym with the most modern and up to date equipment. Treadmills , Bikes, Steppers, Cross Trainers all with TV's. There is also a wide range of free weights, benches and resistance machines available. All-fiT has a spacious studio where a range of fitness classes and courses will take place and there is also a physiotherapy treatment room.

Bridge Club

Castlepollard Bridge Club recommenced their weekly game of Bridge in Hotel Castlepollard on Wednesday night last. The club meet every Wednesday night at 8pm for a friendly game of bridge. The club is anxious to get new members and welcomes anyone interested in playing bridge to come to the Hotel Castlepollard on any Wednesday evening or for further information, phone 086-8283343.

The local senior Camogie team, Lough Lene Gaels, will play the winners of the Raharney/Cullion semi final next Saturday, October 15th, in the county final. We wish them well.

Community Alert

An open meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 27th, at 8pm in the Parish Centre at which there will be a video and a speaker on community alert and crime prevention. In view of the number of robberies in the area recently, this meeting should be supported by all.

Harvest Dance

The Annual Harvest Dance will be held on Friday, October 7th., 2011 in Hotel Castlepollard. Music will be provided by former Castlepollard man, Paddy Halligan and his band. Finger food will be served at 9.30pm. The dance will be preceded by the Harvest Thanksgiving Service in St. Michael's Church. Tickets for the dance are only 10 euro. Castlepollard Gardening Club
The June meeting of Castlepollard Gardening Club was a visit to Belvedere House and Gardens.  This was the club’s first visit to Belvedere and all enjoyed it very much. We were met by guide Bridget Geoghegan who gave us a very good and interesting talk on the various aspects of Belvedere. She then gave us a tour of the house which is relatively small as it was originally a summer house for the Rochfort family.It has magnificent views of Lough Ennel and was built in 1740. The jealous wall which is the biggest folly in Ireland was built in 1760 following a dispute between two Rochfort brothers. The walled garden was looking very well and all enjoyed a pleasant walk through it. Many thanks to Bridget for being an excellent guide. We all enjoyed lovely afternoon tea afterwards at the restaurant.

The autumn programme of Castlepollard Gardening Club will commence on Thursday September 29 in the Parish Centre, Castlepollard at 8pm. Ms. Cathy Doyle from the Royal Horticulture Society of Ireland will give a talk on ‘Going Dutch. The history of bulbs.’ The competition on the night will be for the best three dahlias. All are welcome.



The Westmeath Camogie Team drew with Armagh in the final of the Nancy Murray Cup last Saturday. The replay will be on October 2nd. The seven local players all player their part and are wished well in the replay.

Tullynally Castle and Gardens

The gardens will close at the end of September for the Winter months but the tea rooms in the Courtyard will remain open in the afternoons and are a lovely location to meet friends for afternoon tea.

As part of culture night on the Saturday 24th of September, there will be a screening of the film "La Dolce Vita" an italian film by director Fillini. The film itself is FREE and will be followed by an Italian meal. There is a fee for the meal and booking is essential, so please call Nicola 086 8647451 before Friday 23rd.

The Westmeath Senior Camogie team will compete in the final of the Nancy Murray Cup (Junior A All Ireland Final) against Armagh next Saturday, September 17th, in Ashbourne, Co. Meath. This area has 7 players on the panel, namely, Jemma Egan, Aoife Higgins, Aisling Conaty, Caitriona Murtagh, Janette McCormack, Joanne Walsh and Nadina Grace. We wish them well.


Castletown Finea Coole Whitehall will compete in the Intermediate Final against Coralstown Kinnegad on October 9th. This is the first time in over 30 years that CFCW has reached the final. We wish them well.



Snooker fans may be interested to know that snooker champions, John Higgins and Ken Doherty will play an exhibition game at 7pm in the Greville Arms hotel, Mullingar, on Tuesday, October 25th and all are welcome to attend. Tickets are available locally.

Tullynally Castle and gardens will be open from Thursday to Sunday until the end of September. After september the tearoom will be open on weekends from 1-6. We provide home cooked lunches and cakes all baked on the premises in our new kitchen in the tearoom. The stove will be lit on cold days for that cozy feeling. Enjoy our tearoom toasties with a wide range of fillings and with freshly picked salad leaves with homemade dressing. Fresh bread baked every day in the tearoom and fabulous home made soups.

 The tearoom also launched it's new gallery space in June this year and has hosted local artists like Ursula Mehan and Marta Scudlow and many more, the Platform gallery is also open Thurs to Sun until the end of Sept and then open at weekends.

So why not pop in now for lunch and a walk in the gardens or around the grounds. Remember there's no charge to enter the tearoom, we look forward to seeing you soon.

Lough Lene Gaels defeated St. Oliver Plunkett's in the quarter final of the Senior Hurling Championship on a scoreline of 0.13 -1.8. We wish them well in their upcoming semi final against Clonkil.


The Tidy Towns results were published today. In this years competition:

Castlepollard scored 256 points, an increase of 3 points on its 2010 score.

Collinstown scored 245 points, an increase of 3 points.

Coole scored 235 points, an increase of 4 points.

Finea scored 235 points, no increase on 2010 score.

Drumcree scored 216 points, an increase of 5 points.

Streete scored 239 points, an increase of 3 points.


53 new students have enrolled in 1st year. This is the biggest number in years and we wish them well. We also wish Mr. Bill Ryan, long serving English teacher, well on his retirement.

10th August 2011


Castlepollard exited the Senior hurling championship last Sunday when they were defeated by two points by Lough Lene Gaels. The Gaels will now play Oliver Plunketts in the quarter final. We wish them well.

Clann lir CCE Meeting

A meeting will be held on August 12th in Ringtown GAA clubhouse at 8pm to discuss music and dance lessons for the forthcoming term. All interested are asked to attend.

Smyth Family History

Local historian, Michael Conlon, will give a talk on the Smyth Families in Westmeath on Monday, August 22nd at 11am in the Library. Smyth families resided in many of the big houses in the area such as Barbarville, Glananae, Coole etc and this promises to be a very interesting talk. An exhibition on the Smyth families will be held in the library during the week commencing August 22nd.

Youth Club

The youth club are holding their annual Summer camp from Monday, August 15th to Wednesday, August 17th. A number of trips and activities are planned. For info contact 087-9593339.

On Friday 29th, Midlands radio 3 broadcast live from Hotel Castlepollard. Many local people were interviewed on various programmes during the day. Congratulations to all who took part and also thanks to Eugene O' Neill, garden machinery, for sponsoring the day.

A new scout group was started in Castlepollard in February this year and is growing in numbers all the time. The group leader is Maxine Kelly and she can be contacted at or at 087-7478677. There are two groups Cubs (9-11 years) and Scouts (12-15 years). Cubs meet on a Thursday evening from 7-8pm and Scouts meet from 8-9pm and both meetings take place in Castlepollard Community College.


Boherquill Ramblers are holding their weekly walk in Collinstown on Sunday next, July 24th, at 2pm. This is a beautiful walk along the shores of Lough Lene and up into the Gillardstown hills before returning to the shores of the lake and back to Collinstown. All are welcome to join the walk.


Ballygillen gardens will be open to the public on Sunday next, July 24th, from 12pm to 5pm in aid of the Hospice. These are award winning gardens and are well worth a visit. Please support.


Lough Lene Gaels camogie club are hosting a talent competition from 4-7pm on Sunday, August 7th in the Lough lene inn. Everyone is welcome to participate. Further information, telephone 086-2565644.


A benefit night in aid of St. Lukes Cancer hospital, Dublin, will be held on Friday July 22nd in Hotel Castlepollard. Music will be provided by a number of different artists such as Ita Tighe, Greg McCabe etc. For further information, phone 044-9661194.


The next car draw will be held on Saturday 30th July at 1.15pm outtside the Credit Union offices in Castlepollard. 1st prize will be a Renault Clio 5-door Royale car. 2nd prize is 5000 euro, 3rd prize is 1000 euro, 4th prize is 500 euro and 7 prizes of 200 euro.


This will take place on Sunday 31st July after 11.30am mass.

The Lough Lene Gaels camogie club Summer camp will begin on Monday 18th July and run until Friday 22nd. Please phone 086-2565644 for further details.


On Sunday next, July 17th, there will be a Summer party including a pig roast in the Rectory field at 1pm. All proceeds go to St. Michaels Church of Ireland repair fund and all are invited to attend.


Student loans are available at the Credit Union, so for students heading to college in September, the Credit Union can help with low interest loans with terms and conditions which suit students. Loans are also available to regular members for cars, holidays, home improvements etc. Call to the Credit Union office for details.

Members who have changed their address are reminded to notify the Credit union of their new address.


The 2011 Family field day will take place at the Collinstown GAA grounds on Sunday July 17th at 12.30pm. Proceeds are in aid of Collinstown GAA ground development. All support would be appreciated.

The parishioners of St. Micheal's-on-the-Green, Castlepollard, would very much like to thank all who came and supported the Annual Parish Fete in the Rectory field, 4th June. It was a hugely successful day in every way! Well over 7,000 was raised and as ever, all proceeds go direct to Parish funds.

The last meeting Castlepollard Gardening Club was a  visit to Ballygillen Gardens outside Delvin. These gardens are owned and managed by Evelyn and Alec Sherwin and are a pleasure to visit. We got a beautiful evening and the lawns and various shrubs were in great  condition. The roses were just starting to come into bloom. Some shrubs that died with the hard frosts had been removed and replaced with new ones. Many thanks to Evelyn and Alec for a very enjoyable evening and a lovely cup of tea afterwards.

The next meeting is an afternoon visit to Belvedere House and Gardens on Thursday 30 June.We will get a guided tour of the house and visit the gardens afterwards.  The club will meet in the parish centre carpark at 2pm and go from there to Belvedere. All are welcome.

Castlepollard Credit Union sponsored the award for this year's Senior student of the Year in the local Community College which was won by Chris Lawlor from Lir Park, Castlepollard. Congratulations to Chris and to all the other students who won awards.


A Summer Concert will take place at Tullynally Castle on Saturday June 8.00 p.m.  Andy Morton, tenor, accompanied by Lindsay Tennant-Brown on piano, will perform songs by Poulenc and others. Tickets €25 which includes entry to Tullynally Gardens available from Murray's Shop or at the door. Enjoy a picnic before the concert in Tullynally's lovely grounds.

New Art Gallery

The Platform Gallery, a new artist run gallery space, curated and run by visual artists Nicola Lane and Karl Somers, is opening in the old stalls adjacent to the Tearoom in the courtyard of Tullynally Castle on Thursday the 9th of June.

Artists, both local and international will be given the chance to work in a space which lends itself both as a neutral backdrop for existing work and as a space for more responsive, site specific work.
The inaugural show will be a retrospective collection of work by local artist Ursula Meehan. Through her  experimental approach to process and colour Ursula has explored themes of space,transience and the nature of  being.Her work is influenced by her physical and cultural surroundings and the  nuances of our time.   Curated by Lane and Somers, this show will comprise of a video installation piece and a selection of paintings created over the last ten years.

"Ursula Meehan Retrospective" will run at The Platform Gallery from Friday  the 10th of June to Sunday the 26th June. Opening times are Thursday to Sunday from 1 oclock to 6 oclock, and admission to the Gallery and the Tearoom is free.
The Platform Gallery is seasonal and will correspond with the opening times of Tullynally Castle and Gardens.

Childline Fundraiser

On Friday night next, June 3rd, a family table quiz will be held in Hotel Castlepollard to raise much needed funds for Childline. This is a very good cause and deserves all the support possible. Entry fee is 5 euro per person and the quiz starts at 9.30pm.


On Saturday night next, June 4th, the well known band from the showband era, The Indians, will play at a dance in Hotel Castlepollard. This night will allow some take a trip down memory lane and others to experience for the first time the excitement of the Showband era.

Finea Cemetery Devotions

The annual cemetery devotions will be held in St. Mary's cemetery, Finea, next Sunday, June 5th, after 10.30 Mass and the following Sunday, June 12th, in Castletown and Foyran cemeteries.

Garden Visit

On Thursday evening next, June 2nd, the local gardening club will visit Ballygillen Gardens near Delvin. This is a prize winning garden and is well worth a visit. Everybody is welcome to join the local club on this visit. Meet in Parish Centre car park at 7pm where transport will be available if necessary.


Ladies fashion shop, Trinity Boutique, in Castlepollard are celebrating their second birthday in early june and to celebrate, they are having a special sale from June 1st to 4th whereby customers who buy two items will get the cheapest item free. We wish Trinity Boutique continued success.

Field Day

On Saturday, June 4th, the Annual Summer Fete will be held in the Rectory field on the Coole Road starting at 2pm. There will be all the usual attractions including a dog show, Barbeque, games etc. This is always a very sociable and enjoyable family day out and everybody is welcome.

Poc Fada

The annual Poc Fada competition will be held in Coole on Sunday, June 5th. This is a great family day out and an important fundraiser for the Carer's Assopciation. All support will be welcome.

Castlepollard Gardening Club


The April meeting of Castlepollard Gardening Club was a spring flower arranging demonstration by Ethel Mitchell from Moate. All arrangements were  raffled afterwards and thanks to Ethel for making it a most enjoyable night for everybody who was there. The club donated the proceeds of the night towards the Biily Riordan Memorial Trust in Malawi where Siobhan Cogan from Castlepollard is currently doing a year voluntary nursing.She is working mainly with very sick babies. One thousand four hunderd euro was raised  from this demonstration and some contributions that came in afterwards.There is much poverty there so great use is made of all monies. Siobhan wishes to thank all who supported this fundraiser and she will give a short presentation on her work there when she is home.

The next meeting is on Thursday 2nd June when we visit Ballygillen Gardens outside Delvin. The club will meet in the parish centre carpark at 7pm and go from there to Ballygillen.. All are welcome.



Good wishes are extended to the Westmeath Minor Hurling team who defeated Offaly on Saturday last in Tullamore and now play Dublin in the Leinster semi-final at the end of June. This area were represented on the panel by Tommy Doyle, Tommy Gallagher, David Higgins, Michael Murray, John Egan, Emmett Corrigan and Jason Coyle.

Public Talk

Castlepollard Community Council are hosting a public talk on Wednesday next in the Community College at 7.30pm. The subject is resilience which is one's ability to bounce back from a set back. The guest speaker is Psychologist Shane Martin who is very experienced in this area. The talk is targetted at young people and their parents but should be interesting to everybody. All welcome.

Church of Ireland Events

St. Michael's Church of Ireland, Castlepollard are holding a number of events in the coming months. On Saturday, June 4th, the Annual Summer Fete will be held in the Rectory field on the Coole Road starting at 2pm. There will be all the usual attractions including a dog show, Barbeque, games etc. This is always a very sociable and enjoyable family day out and everybody is welcome.

On Sunday, July 17th, there will be a Summer party at the Rectory which will include a pig roast. Further details will be available nearer the time.

Walking Festival

Boherquill Ramblers held a very successful walking festival last weekend. On Saturday, over 40 people walked from Castlepollard via Tullynally, Kiltoom, the shores of Derravaragh, Faugahlstown, Streamstown to the top of Knock Eyon. On Sunday, over 60 people walked from Fore to the top of the Ben of Fore, through the Ben Lakes, along the shores of Lough Ban, back to the shores of Lough Lene and along the shore to Windtown and back to Fore. The organisers would like to thank the landowners for allowing access to their lands for the walk and to everybody else who made the week-end so enjoyable for all.

Community Alert

In response to the increase in the number of burglaries in the area, a public meeting was held in the Parish Centre on May 10th with a view to setting up a Community Alert group. A large crowd attended and the following officers were elected - Chairman: Pat Davitt, Secretary-Marius Reilly, Treasurer-Thady Burke, P.R.O.-Liz Brady. Local sergeant, Niall McKiernan was present. The take home message from the meeting was for people to be alert, record number plates of suspicious vehicles and to contact Mullingar Garda Station as soon as possible with the information.

Residents in Finea and Castletown-Finea are concerned over the proposed threat from the Minister of Education to close smaller National Schools. A committee has been formed to plan opposition to this plan and a web site,, has been set up.


Work on cleaning up Kilafree Church and Graveyard recommenced at the end of March. Great progress has been made over the past few years and to continue the work volunteers are required to join the team on Monday or Wednesday evenings at 7pm. A sponsored walk to raise funds for the Kilafree clean up project will be held on Sunday, May 8th in Castlepollard. Details are available from Ronnie Ball, 087-1385326.




A social night to raise funds for the North Westmeath Hospice will be held on Saturday, April 30th, in Hotel Castlepollard. Music will be provided by Touch 2 Much. Tickets are 5 euro each and are being promoted by Lough Lene Gaels Camogie Club members. Please support this worthy cause.



A Gospel Choir from N. U.I.Maynooth will perform in St. Michael's Church of Ireland on the Square, Castlepollard at 8pm on Thursday, April 28th. All are welcome to attend.



A table quiz in aid of the Carer's Association will be held in Meehan's pub, Coole on Friday, April 29th at 9.30pm. The entry fee is 10 euro per person.



Boherquill Ramblers will hold their annual open walking festival on Saturday, May 7th and Sunday, May 8th. The Saturday walk will start at 11am in Castlepollard and proceed across country to the shore of Lough Derravaragh and from there, along the shore to the top of Knockeyon. The Sunday walk will start in Fore at 11 am and will proceeed to the top of the Ben of Fore and from there across country to Lough Ban. The walk will continue along the shore to a viewing point at the Glenidan end of the lake where there will be a lunch break. The walk will then return along country lanes and fields to the shores of Lough Lene and then along the shore back to Fore. Both walks are over fields and country lanes and are 4 to 5 hours long. There will be a number of drop-off points along the way where those who do not wish to complete the full walk can avail of a lift back to the starting point. Castlepollard GAA club are holding a drive-in bingo on Easter Monday, 25th April at 2pm behind D&A on the Collinstown road, Castlepollard. This is a first for this area and deserves lots of support.

 The most recent meeting of Castlepollard Gardening Club was held on Friday 25 March in the Parish Centre. The speaker for the night was John Smyth from Belvedere House and Gardens. He gave a very interesting talk on various aspects of designing a garden and had a very good question and answer session afterwards.  The competition on the night was for the best bunch of six daffodils and the winners were Jon Rulle, Ena Courtney Earley and Clare Nangle. The AGM took place after the supper and the principal officers for the coming year are: Chairperson - Tess Gannon, Secretary - Shirley Lamont and Treasurer - Pauline Murphy. A number of various ideas were discussed for the coming year and we hope to continue to have  interesting meetings and visits to gardens.

The April meeting is on Friday 15 April at 8pm in the Parish Centre. This will be a spring flower arranging demonstration by Ethel Mitchell from Moate. All arrangements wiil be raffled afterwards and there is an admission fee of five euro to cover costs. The club are donating the proceeds of the night towards the Biily Riordan Memorial Trust in Malawi. A Large crowd attended the annual North Westmeath St. Patrick's Day Parade in Castlepollard on St. Patrick's day. The theme of the parade was "Legends" and was led by Aoife and the Children of Lir. Congratulations to all concerned on another successful parade. Presentation night for the winning entries in the parade will be held in Farrelly's on Sunday 27th March at 5pm.



Congratulations to North Westmeath TD Willie Penrose on his appointment to the government cabinet. Willie was appointed Minister of State with special responsibility for housing and planning. He is the only Minister of state who will attend government meetings at cabinet level. We wish him well in his new role.

The local Tesco was robbed at around 10pm on Monday 14th March by a group of armed and masked men.

The 2011 Westmeath Ploughing Championships will be held on Sunday, March 27th, at Kiltoom, Castlepollard (take the road down by Whitehall Church). This is a great family day out and worth a visit.

The first meeting of Castlepollard Gardening Club for 2011  took place in the Parish Centre on Thursday 24th February at 8pm. The guest speaker for the night was Jim Donohoe from the Midland Beekeepers Association. He gave a very interesting and informative talk on honey bees. He explained how important bees are worldwide for pollination of plants and where the bees failed there was subsequent failure in plants and trees to produce fruit. In the past 15-20 years bees have been attacked by the varroa mite and so many of the swarms in old houses and trees have disappeared.

The next meeting will be held on Friday 25 March at 8pm in the Parish Centre. The speaker for the night will be John Smyth from Belvedere House and garden. The competition on the night is for the best bunch of six daffodils. The AGM will take place after the supper and membership will be collected. Membership is 15 euro per member or 20 euro per family.  All are welcome.

The Annual Parade will be held at 5.30pm on St. Patrick's Day in Castlepollard. The festivities will begin in the early afternoon with music, childrens' entertainment and much more happening on the Square all afternoon.

There will be prizes for the best shop fronts and also for the winning floats in different categories.



The sponsored swim which had to be postponed on Christmas Day due to the inclement weather will take place on St. Patrick's Day, March 17th, at The Cut, Lough Lene, starting at 12.30pm. This is being organised by Lough Lene Gaels camogie club and the Castlepollard based fundraising committee of Our Lady's Hospital for sick children, Crumlin. All support would be appreciated.

There is an Information Day being organised in Whitehall on Sunday , February 27th at 3p.m., there will be a variety of Irish music and culture.  Comhaltais will be performing on the day and Ringtown’s very own underage Scor na nOg Group.  There will also be local people on the day demonstrating traditional crafts.  Various Information Stands which will include the local Hurling, Camogie and Football Clubs, Walking Club, Active Age Group, Ladies Group to name a few and these stands will be conveniently located displaying all the relevant information relating to their organisation or committee.  Throughout the day, there will be various Pool and Table Tennis Competitions for both Adults and Children, the Active Age Group will also be available to teach cards.  Bowls will also be available for all to participate in.  Refreshments will be also available on the day, with the Ringtown Lotto taking place that evening.  All are welcome.

The winning teams will represent Castlepollard Credit Union in the Regional final which will be held in Moate on March 4th.

Citizens Information “drop in” service provides a face-to-face service to the public. The services we provide seek to meet customer demands for easy access to comprehensive information on rights and entitlements.  We cover a broad range of subjects: social welfare, employment rights, buying a home, moving abroad, education and much more. We are committed to ensuring that citizens have all the information they need, presented and explained in an easy-to-understand way.

 We are in attendance on Wednesday mornings at the Civic Centre, Mullingar Road, Castlepollard from 9:30 am to 12:00 noon.

Citizens Information Services provide free, impartial and confidential information.

A meeting to discuss this years Community Games will take place in Hotel Castlepollard at 9pm on Friday, February 11th. A good turnout is required to ensure that the children of Castlepollard and Finea get the opportunity to take part in the Games.


The annual Castlepollard Credit Union School's Quiz will be held on Monday, February 7th, at 8.00pm in Hotel Castlepollard. There will be two competitions on the night, one for Under 11 and one for Under 13 with the winning team in each competition qualifying for the Regional Final.
The local schools have been informed and invited to take part. Teams are asked to be in their places at 7.45pm.


Castlepollard Book club will meet on Tuesday, February 8th, in Castlepollard Library from 6.45pm to 7.45pm. The Club will discuss the book "Notwithstanding" by Louis de Bernieres. The author revisits the village of his childhood, renamed for comic effect Notwithstanding, in a series of stories relating to local incidents and individuals. The eagerly anticipated Scout Group representing Castlepollard and the surrounding areas will have their registration night in Castlepollard Community College on Wednesday night, February 9th, between 7.00pm and 9.00pm. The group will be registered as "7th Westmeath Castlepollard", and will cater for boys and girls aged 9 to 11 years - Cubs - and 12 to 15 years - Scouts. Weekly meetings will take place on Thursday evenings for the different age groups. It is hoped to organise a Beavers group, catering for 6 to 8 year olds, in due course, and volunteers are being sought to act as leaders.

Gala draw Prize winners list.

The very successful local juvenile soccer club are holding a gala rafffle to help fund the running of the club and also for future projects. Tickets are 100 euro each. The draw is limited to 150 ticketholders and prizes include valuable cash prizes, tickets for premium seats at Ireland's upcoming home matches in the Aviva Stadium etc.

The draw will be held on the night of January 21st in the Hotel Castlepollard and the winning tickets will be drawn out by former Irish International player and Manager John Giles. John Delaney, the FAI’s CEO will also be present to help on the night. All parents, supporters, football people and everybody interested are invited along on the night. John Giles will have a question and answer session for the audience.

The next Derravaragh Music Association Concert will be at Tullynally Castle on Saturday 5th.February starting at 8.00 p.m.prompt. The Trio di Parma, Ivan Rabaglia, violin, Enrico Bronzi, cello, and Alberto Miodini, piano, will perform Schumann’s 1st.Piano Trio in D minor, op 63 and Schubert’s Trio in E flat, D929. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Murray’s Store, or at the door on the night, price 20 euro  


We extend every good wish to local man, Alan Salmon and Oldcastle girl, Aoife Fitzpatrick who got married recently.


We welcome the new Rector, Reverend Damien O'Cathain and his family to Castlepollard. Reverend Damien took up his new position in Castlepollard recently having previously worked in Bandon. His investiture will take place on Friday, January 21st, in St. Michael's Church, The Square, Castlepollard. He is wished every success in his new role.


The Annual Credit Union Schools Quiz will be held on Monday, February 7th, at 8pm in Hotel Castlepollard. The winning under 11 and under 13 teams will represent Castlepollard Credit Union in the area final.
